Finn's father died while in the Middle East, so his mother raised him doing the best she could. He discovered his love of singing during a chance encounter with a Lawn Specialist, and knew he was special at something.

Finn wants his mother to be proud of him and Glee is the first thing that's made him happy in a long time.
