The Palm Pre (styled palm prē, pronounced as the English prefix pre, /ˈpriː/, known internally as the Castle) is a multimedia smartphone designed and marketed by Palm with a multi-touch screen and a sliding keyboard. The phone was launched on June 6, 2009, and is the first to use Palm's new Linux-based operating system, webOS. The Pre functions as a camera phone, a portable media player, a GPS navigator, and an Internet client (with text messaging, e-mail, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity).

The Pre has received positive reviews from technology critics, winning CNET's Best in Show, Best in Category: Cell Phones & Smartphones, and People's Voice for CES 2009.
The iPhone is an Internet and multimedia enabled smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The iPhone functions as a camera phone (also including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player (equivalent to a video iPod), and an Internet client (with email, web browsing, and Wi-Fi connectivity) — using the phone's multi-touch screen to render a virtual keyboard in lieu of a physical keyboard.

The first-generation phone (known as the Original) was quad-band GSM with EDGE; the second generation phone (known as 3G) added UMTS with 3.6 Mbps HSDPA; the third generation adds support for 7.2 Mbps HSDPA downloading but remains limited to 384 Kbps uploading as Apple had not implemented the HSPA protocol.

Apple announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007, after months of rumors and speculation. The original iPhone was introduced in the United States on June 29, 2007 before being marketed worldwide. Time magazine named it the Invention of the Year in 2007. Released July 11, 2008, the iPhone 3G supports faster 3G data speeds and assisted GPS. On March 17, 2009, Apple announced version 3.0 of the iPhone OS operating system for the iPhone (and iPod Touch), released on June 17, 2009. The iPhone 3GS was announced on June 8, 2009, and has improved performance, a camera with more megapixels and video capability, and voice control.
The Motorola Droid is an Internet and multimedia enabled smartphone designed by Motorola and distributed by Verizon Wireless in the United States. The phone runs Google's Android operating system. Features of the phone include Wi-Fi networking, a 5-megapixel low light capable digital camera, a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, interchangeable battery, 3.7-inch 854 x 480 touchscreen, MicroSDHC support with bundled 16GB card, turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation, sliding QWERTY keyboard, and Texas Instruments OMAP 3430 processor. The Motorola Droid runs Android version 2.0, codenamed Eclair. The phone does not, however, run the re-branded MOTOBLUR version of Android, instead providing the Google Experience skin and application stack.

The stock Android operating system restricts applications from being installed outside of onboard memory, in this case limiting application and OS size to a total maximum size of 512MB. It has a hearing aid compatibility (hac) rating of M3/T3. The phone is the first to ship with Google Maps Navigation installed. The Droid had been publicized under the codenames Sholes and Tao and the model number A855.
